# EU leaders condemn Hamas attacks, reaffirm Israel's right to self-defence

*"The European Union strongly condemns Hamas and its terrorist attacks against Israel,"* the statement said. *"We deeply regret the loss of life. Nothing can justify terrorism. We strongly insist on Israel's right to self-defence, in accordance with international humanitarian and international law."*

The leaders also called for the protection of all civilians at all times, in accordance with international humanitarian law. They urged Hamas to release all hostages immediately and unconditionally.

*"We remain committed to a lasting peace based on a two-state solution, doubling our efforts within the Middle East peace process,"* the statement said. *"We underline the need for broad engagement with the legitimate Palestinian authorities, as well as with regional and international partners who could play a positive role in preventing a new escalation."*
