# Ludmila Vartic case: Former police officer accused of issuing posthumous fine sent to trial

The former police officer who allegedly drew up a traffic violation report in the name of Ludmila Vartic, dated after her death, has ended up in the dock. According to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, the document was allegedly issued in connection with a traffic violation committed by the woman's husband, Dumitru Vartic.

The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office has announced that a former employee of the National Inspectorate of Public Security is facing charges for making, possessing, and using false official documents, including electronic ones.

According to evidence collected by the National Anticorruption Center, on March 3, 2026, the defendant, identified as a senior non-commissioned officer in the "Centru" Patrol Section, allegedly stopped a driver who had violated traffic rules. To evade the consequences of a misdemeanor, the driver reportedly asked the police officer to issue the traffic report in the name of his wife, Ludmila Vartic.

Investigators claim that the police officer used electronic equipment while on duty to complete the report with the woman's personal information, authenticating it with his own electronic signature. During the investigation of Ludmila Vartic's death, it was discovered that the fine was issued after her death, which occurred earlier that same day.

Prosecutors allege that Dumitru Vartic later signed the document on behalf of his wife, imitating her signature with a digital pen. The fine of 500 lei, as stated in the report, was paid electronically on March 10, 2026.

The criminal case has now been sent to court for examination. If found guilty, the former police officer could face a fine of up to 75,000 lei or a prison sentence ranging from three to six years.

Ludmila Vartic, a 38-year-old teacher from Hâncești, tragically died on March 3 after falling from the 11th floor of an apartment building in Chișinău. Her death has prompted a criminal investigation into domestic violence and instigation to suicide, following years of allegations of domestic abuse.

Ludmila's husband, Dumitru Vartic, a former vice-president of the Hâncești district, has been named as a suspect in the case, but he denies any involvement in the assault.

This incident has brought to light significant institutional failures, including the fact that a previous suicide attempt in 2025 was not reported to the authorities by medical staff in Hâncești. As a result, the head of the district hospital has resigned.
