# Moldova teachers union threatens protests over delayed salary hikes

> Moldova’s Education and Science Teachers' Federation has announced nationwide protest actions following indications that promised pay increases set for September 1, 2026, may be postponed. The union's executive bureau convened an emergency session today to address the unfolding dispute with the government.

Moldova’s Education and Science Teachers' Federation has announced nationwide protest actions following indications that promised pay increases set for September 1, 2026, may be postponed. The union's executive bureau convened an emergency session today to address the unfolding dispute with the government.

Union leaders confirmed the first rally will take place on August 19 outside the Government Building in Chișinău. Should the wage increases fail to materialize by September 1, full-scale nationwide protests will run throughout September.

The union is also weighing declaring a state of emergency in the education sector starting October 1. Additionally, labor leaders plan a major national demonstration and an official boycott on October 5, coinciding with World Teachers' Day.

Tensions escalated after negotiations between union representatives and the Ministry of Education and Research ended without agreement. Officials floated interim financial proposals, offering temporary monthly allowances of €153–€204 (approx. 3,000–4,000 MDL) based on teaching workload until full pay raises could be implemented.

*"This temporary solution cannot substitute the actual application of salary increases from September 1, 2026. The members of the Executive Bureau note with concern that the entry into force of the salary increases promised in January 2026 for the date of September 1, 2026 remains uncertain. This situation represents a serious violation of the Government's commitments to employees in Education and Science and an act of disrespect towards the pedagogical community,"* the federation stated in an official release.

Government officials maintained that public sector pay revisions remain tied directly to ongoing broader fiscal policy adjustments.

*"The new salary law depends on the approval of the fiscal policy. The Government has already acted in a responsible manner and sent the proposals for the new fiscal policy for consultations. Discussions are currently taking place with all institutions and decisions will follow. In the coming days, as soon as the situation is clarified, the responsible institutions will issue an official announcement in this regard,"* said Government Spokesperson Dumitru Ciorici.

The public sector wage increases were originally pledged under the former Munteanu administration alongside initial drafts of fiscal and salary reforms. Authorities subsequently paused the measure, citing the need to align pay adjustments with the newly presented budget-fiscal framework.
