# Government warning: Moldova must rationalize water reserves before autumn rains

> Moldova needs to conserve its water reserves until the autumn rains due to a severe hydrological drought and the ongoing decline in the level of the Nistru River. Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder said authorities must reduce pressure on water resources and develop long-term solutions.

Moldova needs to conserve its water reserves until the autumn rains due to a severe hydrological drought and the ongoing decline in the level of the Nistru River. Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder said authorities must reduce pressure on water resources and develop long-term solutions.

The minister's statement comes a day after the Nistru Commission decided, on August 11, to reduce the water flow discharged into the Nistru River from 85 to 75 cubic meters per second until the end of the month. This decision aims to preserve water reserves.

"We must focus on preserving our water reserves for as long as possible, to ensure we reach the autumn rains, which will help replenish them," declared Gheorghe Hajder before the Government meeting on August 12.

According to the minister, long-term solutions require more rational water consumption and adaptation to new realities, particularly concerning industrial and irrigation needs.

"The solution is a comprehensive one, supported by evidence on the government platform. It requires us to use water more efficiently and adapt our consumption to current realities. This includes industrial usage and irrigation, where we need to adopt more effective methods," said the minister.

Hajder also emphasized the importance of implementing measures such as afforestation and water conservation to collect and utilize rainfall during wetter periods.

"Clearly, in the long term, we are discussing afforestation and reserving water in both reservoirs and public spaces in Moldova. This will allow us to collect water when it is available and use it later," he added.

Amid a severe drought, the Republic of Moldova declared a 30-day hydrological alert beginning July 28, undertaking close monitoring of the Nistru River's flow in collaboration with Ukraine.

To manage the available resources, both countries have agreed to temporarily reduce discharges from the Novodnestrovsk reservoir to 75 cubic meters per second until the end of August.

On August 7, the Chisinau government announced the activation of five high-capacity pumps sent to the capital's City Hall to enhance operations at the Vadul lui Vodă water intake station.
