# Poland to swap MiG-29 jets for Ukrainian long-range drones

Poland plans to send Soviet-built MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine within the coming weeks. In exchange, Warsaw will receive a batch of long-range attack drones and the manufacturing technology required to produce them, according to sources cited by Wirtualna Polska.

While sources did not specify the exact total number of jets, the Polish Ministry of National Defence previously referenced transferring six to eight aircraft. These fighters are nearing the end of their operational service life, and the Polish military had originally planned to decommission them last year.

**Strategic guarantees and procurement risks**

Under the proposed terms, Warsaw expects to acquire 1,500 long-range drones produced by Ukrainian manufacturer Fire Point. The agreement also includes guarantees for an additional 1,500 drones if Poland faces direct military aggression.  

Despite reaching an agreement in principle, Polish officials remain cautious about implementation. Sources noted concerns that during a critical national emergency, the manufacturer could cite force majeure and prioritize its own frontline needs.  

**Breaking the negotiation deadlock**

Bilateral talks over exchanging MiG-29 jets for unmanned technology began last year but reached an impasse. In late June, Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that transfer plans were suspended after Kyiv hesitated to share proprietary drone manufacturing methods.  

The diplomatic deadlock was broken following renewed high-level negotiations involving Ukrainian official Rustem Umerov. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had assigned Umerov to focus on securing international partner agreements for drone technology and production.  

In late July, the Polish Ministry of National Defence confirmed receiving updated proposals from Kyiv to finalize the exchange.
