# Moldova recruits record 472 teachers with €19,500 incentive

Moldova has placed 472 newly qualified teachers in public schools this autumn following a bonus increase of up to €19,500, marking the highest recruitment intake since 2018, the government said on Monday.

The hiring drive aims to ease a persistent shortage of roughly 1,000 teachers nationwide, which has forced schools to rely on existing staff working overtime. The largest shortfalls remain among kindergarten educators and primary school teachers, as well as in rural districts outside the main cities of Chisinau and Balti.

*"The increased allowance to 375,000 Moldovan lei (€19,500) has strongly motivated young professionals to teach outside major urban centres, especially in STEM fields,"* Education and Research Minister Dan Perciun said during an interview on public broadcaster Moldova 1.

A record 133 recruits have agreed to teach mathematics.

The financial package is tiered to attract talent to high-need areas. Higher education graduates receive a baseline grant of €10,400 (200,000 MDL), while college graduates receive €8,300. Candidates receive an additional €3,900 for taking rural posts and €5,200 for teaching shortage disciplines such as chemistry, physics, IT, and mathematics.

Grants are distributed in two equal installments after six and 18 months of service. Recipients commit to teaching for at least five years, with early departures requiring a full refund.

According to ministry data, 90 percent of participants remain in education after their mandatory term. To address early career attrition, authorities provide dedicated mentors and reduced teaching workloads during the first five years.

The government also plans to overhaul teacher training starting in 2027 by integrating classroom apprenticeships from the first semester of university studies.
