# Bookfest returns to Chisinau, uniting Romanian and Moldovan publishing

**Bilateral Literary Ties**

The five-day fair features thousands of newly released titles, panel discussions, and book signings with prominent writers and intellectuals from Romania and Moldova. Admission is free, and visitors can access discounted editions throughout the event.

*“Bookfest continues to celebrate Romanian-language literature in Chișinău, honoring our shared commitment to the Romanian language and written culture across both Romania and Moldova,”* said Mihai Mitrică, executive director of the Romanian Publishers Association. *“While our primary focus is Romanian literature, the program also highlights history and historiography, drawing international specialists from France to Chișinău.”*

The event has established itself as an essential bridge between academic and literary communities on both sides of the border, providing readers with direct access to contemporary publications and cultural debates.

*“Bringing Bookfest—one of Romania's largest book fairs—to Moldova was a long-held ambition,”* said Igor Șarov, vice-rector of Moldova State University (USM) and honorary president of the fair, speaking on public broadcaster Moldova 1. *“It has rapidly become a vibrant platform for intellectuals, authors, scholars, and professors, offering new releases, major discounts, and encounters with celebrated writers.”

**Joint Frankfurt Presentation**

This year's edition opened with a high-level discussion on the Frankfurter Buchmesse, the world's most influential publishing fair, where Romania has been designated Guest of Honour. Publishers announced plans for a shared pavilion uniting Romanian and Moldovan authors under the joint banner *'Romanian Language, Guest of Honour.'*

*“Romania is the Guest of Honour, and we will participate with a joint stand under the theme *‘Romanian Language, Guest of Honour,’”* said Gheorghe Prini, president of the Union of Publishers of Moldova. *“The organizers approved our joint presence, and we are translating works into German to showcase our cultural identity on the global stage as Moldova pursues European integration.”*

The fair is organized with institutional and financial support from the Romanian Government's Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova (DRRM) alongside Moldova's Ministry of Culture.

*“We must provide publishers with tangible opportunities to grow, foster high-quality book production, and stimulate reading across the country,”* said Moldovan Culture Minister Dan Suruceanu. *“Strengthening the publishing sector is a vital national priority.”*

Bookfest Chișinău runs through September 6 at the Mediacor center within Moldova State University, with doors open daily from 10:00 to 20:00. Moldova's public broadcaster, Moldova 1, serves as the event's official media partner.
