# Moldova economy to surge upon EU entry, Economy Minister Nasui says

Moldova's economy holds vast growth potential and will surge upon European Union accession, newly appointed Economic Development and Digitalization Minister Claudiu Nasui said during a televised broadcast on Wednesday.

Speaking on TV8's current-affairs program *“Cutia Neagră,”* the former Romanian lawmaker and cabinet minister described full European integration as a decisive turning point that will link Moldova directly to international capital and commercial flows. 

Nasui noted that Moldova's absence from the EU single market remains its primary competitive disadvantage relative to Romania, stressing that European convergence must serve as a comprehensive engine for economic modernization.

**Tackling state-owned enterprises and public waste**

Addressing structural inefficiencies, the minister pledged to confront deep-seated losses in state-owned enterprises, warning that operational deficits are ultimately subsidized by taxpayers.

*“Waste and inefficiency in state companies are funded out of citizens' pockets,”* Nasui said, adding that targeted remedies will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis across state firms.

He emphasized that spending reductions would target misallocated public subsidies rather than social welfare programs. Specific fiscal consolidation measures will be presented jointly with cabinet colleagues as part of an administration-wide review.

**Slashing red tape for small enterprises**

The new minister identified aggressive deregulation as a primary catalyst for entrepreneurship, arguing that burdensome bureaucracy frequently suffocates early-stage ventures.

*“When you are small, risks are low, but bureaucracy can strangle ventures in their infancy,”* Nasui said, committing to simplify administrative hurdles so entrepreneurs can launch businesses with minimal procedural friction.

Nasui, who previously served as Romania's economy minister in 2020–2021, joined the Moldovan cabinet following a reshuffle announced by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan on August 25, when he was also granted Moldovan citizenship. 

Prime Minister Tofan previously highlighted that Nasui's ministerial background in Bucharest will help deepen bilateral economic ties, with Romania currently absorbing roughly 30% of Moldova's total exports. The appointment coincides with a broader public-sector overhaul, under which the government plans to unveil an agency streamlining and consolidation strategy by September 22.
