The issue of stray dogs in Ceadâr-Lunga is not new and continues to draw the attention of local residents. While some people claim the animals do not bother them, the majority express concerns about the dogs that gather on the streets and the dangers they pose.

"I am so fed up with these dogs. They attack people, and I don't know how to solve this problem. It doesn't depend on me anyway; the authorities need to do their job."

"I don’t mind them; let them run. I wouldn't say there are that many. All the dogs are chipped, so let them be free as long as they are identified."

"The shelter needs to be expanded; there should be more space because the current shelter is too small. They are unable to capture all the stray dogs. Only by enlarging and properly maintaining the shelter will the problem be resolved. They often gather in packs and have attacked children. In my area, near the meat factory, there are a lot of them."

On the outskirts of the town of Ceadâr-Lunga, the Temporary Center for Stray Animals has been in operation for four years. Initially, the center could accommodate only 25 dogs, but its capacity has since expanded to house 120 animals. The dogs are kept in aviaries and are fed twice a day.

"Fresh bread. In the morning, we give them half a loaf, and in the evening, we offer them bread along with leftover food. I collect the bread from kindergartens", says Nicolai Sîrbov, an employee at the animal center.

Local authorities are working to control the situation by capturing, sterilizing, and vaccinating stray dogs. However, despite these efforts, the population of stray dogs remains high.

*"Currently, there are around 120 dogs in this area. We believe that even after sterilization, some of these dogs may still be aggressive. Therefore, it does not make sense to leave them on the streets. We recently signed a contract with a company from Chisinau that has sterilized about 100 dogs. They have been sterilized, vaccinated, and each one has an ear tag, but this has not resolved the issue,"* says Anatoli Topal, the mayor of Ceadâr-Lunga.

According to the Ceadir-Lunga City Hall, there are around 300 stray dogs in the city, and about 70% of them were sterilized.
