Moldova closed the Tudora-Starokazacie border crossing with Ukraine overnight after a drone strike killed two civilians and damaged checkpoint facilities just across the southern frontier.

**Fatal overnight strike halts border operations**

The attack occurred between 23:35 and 00:05 near the Starokazacie crossing in Ukraine’s Odesa region, adjacent to Moldova's southeastern border. Ukrainian authorities reported that one unmanned aerial vehicle struck the checkpoint directly, while two others crashed nearby. All three drones came down on Ukrainian territory.

Personnel and travelers were evacuated at 23:35 as air raid sirens sounded across southern Ukraine. Five minutes later, a Moldovan Border Police mobile patrol heard four explosions and observed flashes across the frontier.

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine later confirmed that two civilians were killed and two others injured in the strike. The victims' citizenship has not yet been established. The Starokazacie facilities sustained structural damage, leaving the crossing non-operational and halting all traffic through Tudora.

**Heightened security and safety protocols**

Moldovan authorities confirmed that no drone fragments or hazardous objects landed on Moldovan territory. Border patrols remain on high alert along the frontier.

*“Citizens who hear the sound of drones or explosions should remain calm and seek shelter indoors,”* the Moldovan Border Police said in a statement, urging the public to report any suspicious debris immediately to the 112 emergency service.

The border closure follows a separate incident earlier Tuesday evening, when an errant drone crashed into a sunflower field in Mihăilenii Vechi, a village in Moldova's northern Rîșcani district, igniting four localized fires. Police reported no casualties in that crash.
