# Prime Minister Tofan: "We aim to reduce the budget imbalance in talks with the IMF"

The government aims to reduce the budget deficit and has announced a series of fiscal and administrative reforms. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan met with Svetlana Cerović, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) resident representative in the Republic of Moldova, to discuss the fiscal and budgetary situation, public debt management, and measures needed to strengthen state finances. Key priorities include implementing fiscal reform, reducing administrative costs, and streamlining government structures and agencies.

During the discussions, officials addressed key fiscal and budgetary issues, as well as the economic reforms needed to improve the public finance situation.

The Head of Government stated that the discussions were direct and focused on measures to reduce the budget imbalance.

"I had a very straightforward conversation with Svetlana Cerović, the IMF's reisdent representative in the Republic of Moldova. We spoke openly about the budget situation and what actions we need to take to improve it. We are determined to reduce the budget imbalance, and we recognize that this will require bold decisions. We discussed fiscal reforms, reducing administrative costs for the state, and simplifying or merging certain structures and agencies where there is overlap or inefficiency," the Prime Minister noted.

Another topic addressed was the administration of state assets. Vasile Tofan emphasized the need to enhance the efficiency of state-owned companies and indicated that where there is no clear justification for state ownership, privatization processes could be initiated.

According to the Prime Minister, these processes must be transparent and competitive to attract private investment and increase the economy's productivity.

The officials also examined the cost of state financing and explored ways to manage public debt more effectively. In this context, they discussed better utilization of available external financing sources and strategies to reduce debt-servicing costs.

The Prime Minister stressed that measures for budgetary discipline must ultimately aim to generate additional resources for investment and development.

"Budgetary discipline is not an end in itself. We need it to invest more effectively in areas that matter—such as people, infrastructure, and economic development—without passing the bill on to future generations," the Prime Minister said.

The government and the IMF agreed to continue their dialogue and cooperation, including leveraging the Fund's expertise to develop and implement economic and fiscal-budgetary reforms.

Vasile Tofan, however, said the authorities in Chisinau are responsible for decisions on reforms. 

"We need partners to assist us with expertise, but the decisions and accountability for reforms rest with us," the Prime Minister concluded.
