# Moldova diesel hits record 35 MDL as fuel crisis hits households

Surging fuel prices threaten the living standards of nearly 80 percent of Moldovans as record retail price caps strain agriculture, freight transport, and lower-income families, economic analyst Veaceslav Ioniță warned on Wednesday.

The National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) set fuel price ceilings for September 16 at €1.70 (approx. 33.35 MDL) per liter for gasoline and €1.79 (approx. 35.15 MDL) for diesel. This marks the first time retail diesel has crossed the historic 35 MDL threshold in the Republic of Moldova.

**Global bottlenecks drive domestic price hikes**

Moldova remains fully reliant on fuel imports, leaving domestic consumers directly exposed to external shocks. Ioniță pointed to compounding global pressures, including maritime disruptions in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, depleted strategic reserves in the United States and China, and strikes targeting Russian oil processing infrastructure.

*“Russian Federation has effectively shifted from a major petroleum exporter to an importer, creating severe strain on global supply,”* Ioniță said during an appearance on Radio Moldova. *“In Moldova, this is primarily a social crisis rather than just an economic issue, directly eroding public purchasing power.”*

**Agricultural pressure and rising inflation risks**

Higher fuel costs will cascade across basic goods and services if sustained over several months. Agriculture and commercial freight face immediate liquidity constraints, as diesel represents the primary operating input for seasonal farm work and logistics.

*“Rising fuel prices are already pushing international gas and fertilizer costs higher,”* Ioniță explained, adding that domestic inflation could accelerate into a 7 to 9 percent range. He noted that approximately 500,000 vulnerable households spend the vast majority of their income on essential food and transport.

Compounding the problem, public spending options remain constrained ahead of the winter heating season. *“The state is already forced to borrow €1.17 billion (approx. 23 billion MDL) to cover planned budget spending this year,”* Ioniță noted, emphasizing that targeted support must prioritize farmers and low-income families.
