Global fuel prices surged sharply as the escalating war in Iran rippled across international energy markets, straining non-belligerent nations and hitting record retail highs in vulnerable import-dependent economies like Moldova, Axios reported.

The sudden spike in energy costs is piling pressure onto households and depleting state budgets in developing economies attempting to cushion the blow. Energy expert Ben Geman noted that retail price hikes vary widely by jurisdiction, but nations heavily dependent on imports, such as Pakistan and Myanmar, face severe shocks.

Even the United States, the world’s leading producer of crude oil and gasoline, is grappling with steep price surges. Because crude oil benchmarks are established on international trading markets, the U.S. federal government does not cap or subsidize retail motor fuel, leaving drivers exposed.

Geman identified Ukrainian drone strikes against Russian refining facilities as another major compounding factor, tightening international refined product markets and driving up diesel costs in particular.

*“Without a resolution to the conflict, many states face difficult choices: either spend funds to offset fuel prices or endure the political fallout of these spikes,”* Geman noted.

Dozens of governments have rolled out retail price caps, fuel subsidies, or tax reductions to stabilize domestic markets, according to the International Energy Agency. Others are seeking to curb demand by expanding remote working arrangements and trimming official travel budgets.

*“Many countries have failed to curb demand and instead artificially lower prices. This approach is misguided. A controlled, phased reduction in demand is far less politically harmful than sudden, disruptive measures,”* said Joseph Webster, an energy expert at the Atlantic Council.

**Moldova among hardest-hit nations globally**

World Bank data reveals that the sharpest fuel price increases since the onset of the war in Iran have hit Iran itself with a 100 percent rise, followed by Syria at 79 percent, Malaysia at 69 percent, Guatemala at 63 percent, and the United Arab Emirates at 60 percent. Pakistan and the Philippines registered 51 percent surges, Norway 50 percent, the United States 49 percent, and Laos 44 percent.

Moldova ranks among the most affected European countries with a 42 percent cumulative price jump, surpassing Turkey, Ghana, and Sierra Leone at 40 percent. In the immediate neighborhood, fuel prices advanced 38 percent in Ukraine and 22 percent in Romania.

The external supply squeeze pushed Moldovan retail fuel prices to unprecedented records over the September 19–21 weekend. National retail ceilings reached €1.68 (approx. 33.80 MDL) per liter for standard gasoline and €1.79 (approx. 36.11 MDL) per liter for diesel, directly squeezing household purchasing power across the country.
