# War risks threaten Black Sea energy security, expert warns

> Mounting hostilities in Ukraine and the Middle East are compounding threats to Black Sea energy supplies, leaving the Republic of Moldova vulnerable to regional infrastructure shocks ahead of winter, foreign policy expert Grigore Guzun warned.

Mounting hostilities in Ukraine and the Middle East are compounding threats to Black Sea energy supplies, leaving the Republic of Moldova vulnerable to regional infrastructure shocks ahead of winter, foreign policy expert Grigore Guzun warned.

Speaking on the "În Context" program on public broadcaster Moldova 1, Guzun stressed that modern economies cannot isolate themselves from systemic regional disruptions. He urged active diplomatic engagement to prevent compounding logistics crises.

*“All economies are currently interconnected,”* said Guzun. *“We cannot witness an economic failure in one country without triggering repercussions across global markets.”*

**Infrastructure fragility overshadows fuel reserves**

Addressing Ukraine’s energy security, the analyst emphasized that physical transmission lines and gas conduits—rather than fuel reserves—represent the most immediate vulnerability. While Ukraine holds an estimated 15 billion cubic meters of natural gas in storage, repeated Russian attacks directly threaten the distribution system.

*“The primary issue is not access to gas,”* Guzun said. *“The vulnerability lies in attacks on Ukraine’s energy and gas infrastructure, which jeopardises regional security across the Black Sea per se.”*

Guzun noted that regional risks extend beyond electricity and gas to vital diesel supplies, which underpin logistical and industrial activity. A supply squeeze could cause chain-reaction disruptions across Moldova's broader economy.

**Maritime choke points disrupt European supply lines**

Concurrently, tensions surrounding key Middle Eastern waterways are escalating logistics pressures. Maritime shipping risks have expanded from the Strait of Hormuz to critical corridors across the Red Sea, threatening fuel and cargo deliveries bound for the European continent.

Diplomatic maneuvers remain underway on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. While French President Emmanuel Macron has explored frameworks for a potential energy armistice between Kyiv and Moscow, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to seek defense production agreements to safeguard civilian infrastructure before temperatures drop.
