Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu dismissed claims that Moldova pays Europe’s highest gas prices on Friday, citing Eurostat data showing household retail tariffs remain well below the European Union average.

**Comparative data refutes disinformation**

Junghietu noted that official European statistical benchmarks for late 2025 placed Moldovan consumer prices at 9.47 eurocents per kilowatt-hour, including taxes, compared to the bloc's average of 12.28 eurocents. Any objective assessment must rely on verifiable metrics using identical timeframes, consumption bands, and regulatory methodologies.

“Natural gas in Moldova is not the most expensive in Europe,” said Junghietu in a public statement addressing widespread online allegations. “Such comparisons must be conducted fairly rather than weaponized to mislead the public.”

**Regulator details Western European tariff gaps**

The National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) corroborated the minister's findings, highlighting that selective comparisons create a distorted public perception. Household consumers across Sweden, Italy, the Netherlands, and France paid between 35 and 44 Moldovan lei (approx. €1.74 to €2.19) per cubic meter in September when factoring in transmission fees, supply charges, and taxes.

“Comparisons must account for wholesale acquisition costs, domestic tax rates, distribution tariffs, and state compensation schemes,” said ANRE in an official advisory. The regulator warned that isolating procurement figures distorts the real financial impact on end users.

**Winter tariff adjustments take effect**

The clarification follows a regulated domestic tariff increase on October 1, which raised household gas prices to 26.24 MDL (approx. €1.31) per cubic meter, up from 20.30 MDL. State energy trader Energocom requested the adjustment to cover rising spot procurement costs on European regional hubs.

Moldova entered a 60-day nationwide energy and hydrological emergency on September 26 to safeguard supply routes ahead of the heating season. Government officials pledged targeted compensations to protect low-income households from rising winter heating expenses.
