# Lithuanian MP: "We support Moldova's EU accession"

Lithuania maintains that the Republic of Moldova's gradual European integration must serve exclusively as a bridge to full accession, not as an alternative or a permanent interim status. Remigijus Motuzas, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Lithuanian Parliament, made this statement on the Moldova 1 program "Diplomatic Dimension."

The official said that Chișinău’s progress on the European path must be assessed strictly on its own merits, without being hindered by other political considerations.

*"If Moldova implements reforms, meets accession criteria, and accepts all associated obligations, it should have the opportunity to become a full member of the European Union—with full rights and the ability to participate in and adopt its joint decisions. Our interest lies not in Moldova’s partial or limited accession, but in the successful completion of the accession process and the Republic of Moldova’s full membership in the European Union,"* noted Remigijus Motuzas.

Lithuania supports the accelerated integration of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine; however, this speed should not come at the cost of lower standards. There is no choice to be made between faster integration and high-quality reforms; these processes must unfold simultaneously or in parallel.

*"The most important aspect remains what we call fundamental reforms. This entails the rule of law and, naturally, an independent and efficient judiciary, a genuine fight against corruption, strong democratic institutions, and an efficient public administration. The overall trajectory of the Republic of Moldova’s accession negotiations will depend on progress in these areas,"* the Lithuanian official explained.

A strong Republic of Moldova integrated into the European Union serves the direct strategic interest of the entire bloc's security, significantly curtailing the Russian Federation's room for maneuver in the region. "We are talking about a country facing pressure from Russia—ranging from disinformation and interference in democratic processes to economic pressure and hybrid threats. A stronger, more united, more resilient, and more EU-integrated Moldova is in the interest of all of Europe, and Moldova enjoys immense support," Remigijus Motuzas said.

The Lithuanian MP noted that Moldovan citizens need to experience the tangible benefits of European integration prior to formal accession, though access to EU programs must not substitute for full membership. Lithuania will assume the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2027. One of Vilnius's priorities is accelerating the integration of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
