# Moldovan inventor patents food packaging made from fruit peel

Chisinau inventor Olga Fiodorov has patented an innovative biodegradable packaging material derived entirely from agricultural by-products, offering an eco-friendly food contact alternative to single-use plastics across the Republic of Moldova.

The proprietary technology processes fruit and vegetable peels, residual pulp, seeds, and other plant fractions rich in natural fibres, pectin, and cellulose. The resulting thin, food-grade biodegradable film can be manufactured into containers and bags of various dimensions without synthetic polymer additives.

**Valorising agricultural waste streams**

The initiative addresses both environmental degradation and the substantial volume of organic residues discarded annually by Moldova’s agrarian sector.

*“The Republic of Moldova generates significant volumes of agri-food by-products each year,”* said Fiodorov on public broadcaster Radio Moldova’s *“Zi de Zi”* program. *“In 2025 alone, more than 70,000 tonnes originating from agriculture and horticulture remained outside any economic circuit. Through this technology, these resources are converted into a biodegradable, safe, and ecological material suitable for food packaging.”*

Having secured intellectual property protection, the food industry engineer plans to expand commercial testing alongside her team over the coming months.

*“We will develop new formats, and we are currently working on thermoformed trays for fresh produce so we can serve both dry goods and fresh categories,”* Fiodorov said. *“The final, and perhaps most critical step, is establishing a commercial pilot production facility.”*

**Eliminating hidden synthetic coatings**

While biodegradable packaging has gained domestic market share, Fiodorov pointed out that most commercial options still incorporate concealed inner plastic coatings that compromise ecological integrity and contaminate foodstuffs.

*“Even cardboard packaging often has an inner plastic film on the surface directly contacting food,”* the inventor explained. *“This enables chemical migration into the food matrix, particularly when items are packaged at elevated temperatures.”*

The technology aims to curb human exposure to microplastics and nanoplastics, which have become a growing public health concern worldwide.

*“Nanoplastics can penetrate vascularised organs such as the heart and liver, with studies showing humans ingest roughly five grams of plastic weekly,”* Fiodorov noted. She added that Moldova is progressively aligning its waste management frameworks with European Union standards to foster a circular economy.

Global plastic production has escalated from approximately two million tonnes in 1950 to over 430 million tonnes annually today.

To tackle packaging pollution, Moldova is scheduled to launch a nationwide Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) for plastic, glass, and metal beverage containers in 2027. Consumers will pay a refundable deposit of around 2 MDL (approx. €0.10 / $0.11), targeting an initial 60% collection rate that is projected to reach 80% by 2030.
