In the Republic of Moldova, 86 transplant operations were performed during the first nine months of the current year, funded by the mandatory health insurance fund. According to the National Health Insurance Company (CNAM), it allocated 12.5 million lei for these procedures.

Of the procedures performed, seven were liver transplants, ten were kidney transplants, and ten were corneal transplants.

Additionally, surgeons performed 54 amniotic membrane transplants on the ocular surface, one scleral transplant, and four living-donor retrievals.

The transplant surgeries took place at two public medical institutions: the "Timofei Moșneaga" Republican Clinical Hospital and the "Sfânta Treime" Municipal Clinical Hospital in Chișinău.

For 2026, the mandatory health insurance funds have allocated 16.6 million lei to cover 132 transplant procedures.

Of these, liver transplants are the most expensive, costing more than one million lei per procedure.

Mandatory health insurance funds transplant services for insured individuals with a medical indication who are on the waiting list.

Currently, the Republic of Moldova does not perform stem cell, pancreas, or intestinal transplants. According to the Transplant Agency, the high cost of these procedures is one reason.

Moldovan patients requiring procedures not available domestically can undergo transplants in countries such as Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Romania, or Turkey.
