More than 3,300 Moldovan families replaced old household appliances with energy-efficient models between March and September 2026 through the European Union-funded EcoVoucher programme.

**Energy-efficient appliances for vulnerable households**

According to the National Center for Sustainable Energy (CNED), beneficiaries purchased 1,578 refrigerators and 1,754 washing machines using vouchers worth €300 (approximately 6,000 MDL). The vouchers covered up to 70% of the appliances’ purchase price.

The refrigerators, including models with integrated freezers, carried energy efficiency ratings of A, B, C or D under the new energy labelling system. The washing machines were rated class A. All appliances met the programme’s energy efficiency criteria and European Conformity (CE) requirements.

The programme prioritised families with children under 18, households with at least two people aged over 63, and people with severe disabilities. Among the beneficiaries, 2,322 were families with minor children, 598 were people aged over 63, and 412 were people with severe disabilities.

EcoVoucher covered all districts of Moldova, as well as the municipalities of Chisinau and Balti and the autonomous territorial unit of Gagauzia. Vouchers were issued to beneficiaries in more than 1,400 localities, representing 94% of the country’s localities. Households in more than 1,350 localities, or 91% of the national total, redeemed their vouchers.

CNED Director Ion Muntean said the results of this year’s programme sessions demonstrated that energy efficiency could deliver immediate, tangible benefits to households.

*“By replacing old appliances with energy-efficient equipment, families reduce their energy consumption and monthly expenses while enjoying greater comfort. At the national level, these savings accumulate and contribute to more efficient use of energy resources,”* Muntean said.

He added that the programme’s results since its launch demonstrated how a simple, accessible mechanism could generate real savings for both households and the country.

**Lower electricity consumption and emissions**

The newly purchased appliances are expected to save approximately 700,000 kWh of electricity annually, equivalent to around €130,000 (approximately 2.6 million MDL). The estimated savings would also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 350 tonnes of CO₂ a year.

Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu said replacing older refrigerators and washing machines with more efficient models could help households reduce electricity bills over the long term.

*“Energy labels help people compare appliance consumption and make choices based on both the purchase price and running costs,”* Junghietu said. He added that EU support made energy-efficient appliances more accessible to families most in need.

European Union Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova Iwona Piórko said the programme offered benefits beyond immediate financial assistance by helping households reduce electricity consumption and expenses over time.

*“It is a concrete example of how EU support translates into lasting benefits for citizens, particularly those who need assistance most,”* Piórko said.

Since the EcoVoucher programme was launched, a total of 43,366 large household appliances have been replaced, including nearly 20,640 refrigerators and more than 22,690 washing machines.
