Russian opposition figure Garry Kasparov has warned that US President Donald Trump's policies are helping Vladimir Putin, urging Europe to strengthen its response to Russia's war against Ukraine.

**Kasparov says Trump's approach risks weakening Europe**

Kasparov, co-founder of the Free Russia Forum, told Deutsche Welle (DW) that Trump's decision to ease sanctions on Russian diesel reflected ongoing contacts between the US president's envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, and the Kremlin.

The Russian opposition politician described the move as a final wake-up call for Europe, warning that the war in Ukraine could end in catastrophe.

*“This war requires extraordinary measures, but as we approach the end of the fifth year since the full-scale invasion began, Europe remains in an ambiguous position. The European Union cannot decide which direction to take: whether it is at war with Putin or trying to find a way to compromise,”* Kasparov said in an interview with DW's correspondent in Warsaw, where the 15th Free Russia Forum is taking place.

Kasparov said he hoped what he described as Trump's *“open attack on Ukraine”* — including his call for a replacement for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy — would push Europe to make a clear decision and mobilise all its resources.

**Europe has yet to shift its economy onto a war footing**

*“War demands sacrifices and requires at least part of the economy to be put on a war footing, but so far we have not seen this in Europe. Such measures are being adopted in countries that could become direct targets of Russian aggression, but the European Union as a whole continues to operate as usual,”* Kasparov said.

He argued that continued trade with Russia and the absence of ambassadorial recalls from Moscow sent a signal to the Kremlin that Europe remained reluctant to take decisive action.

*“For Putin, this is a clear signal that political impotence and corruption continue to dominate European politics,”* Kasparov said.

**Kasparov predicts a decisive turn in the war**

The opposition politician also predicted that the war would enter its final stretch towards a resolution in 2027. He argued, however, that the outcome would not be a frozen conflict but a catastrophe for one of the sides.

In his assessment, the consequences could be disastrous either for Ukraine and Europe or for Russia, potentially taking the form of the collapse of Vladimir Putin's regime, DW reported.
