# Milk production rises to 64,000 tonnes annually

> Commercial milk production has nearly tripled over the past five years, rising from 23,000 to 64,000 tonnes annually. To reduce import dependency and increase the market share of domestic products, authorities are focusing on farm modernization and the development of local processing capacities. These statements were made by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan during a visit to the Gnatiuc family farm in the Glodeni district and the "Lactis" dairy plant in Râșcani.

According to the Prime Minister, the Republic of Moldova meets approximately 60% of its consumption needs for milk and dairy products through domestic production. By comparison, the consumption coverage rate stands at 98% for eggs, 90% for pork, and 70% for poultry.

"We need to produce more of the food we consume. Above all, we need modern, productive farms," noted Vasile Tofan.

The head of government emphasized that support policies for the sector have shifted from subsidizing livestock numbers to supporting actual milk production, with the aim of boosting farm productivity and efficiency. The Gnatiuc family farm exemplifies this approach. The facility has 365 dairy cows, with an average yield of approximately 42 liters of milk per cow per day—a level comparable to that of high-performing farms in the European Union.

Investments in farm modernization are supported, among other initiatives, by the "Investments for Governance, Growth and Resilience in Agriculture" (AGGRI) program, which provides grants for the purchase of high-productivity purebred livestock, equipment, and modern technologies.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the role of local processing in developing the livestock sector. The "Lactis" dairy plant in Rîșcani, which employs over 200 people, received state investment support to modernize its production processes. The company is also developing aged cheese production, a segment currently dominated by imports. According to the Prime Minister, locally manufactured products can become competitive alternatives in terms of both quality and price.

"*More milk produced here at home, more Moldovan products on the shelves, and more added value remaining in our economy. This is the direction in which we want to develop the sector*," stated Vasile Tofan.

In 2025, out of a total domestic milk production estimated at approximately 246,000 tonnes, 64,000 tonnes came from commercial farms. For 2026, production from households is estimated at 160,000 tonnes, while production from farms is projected at approximately 70,000 tonnes.
