Moldovan President Maia Sandu called for a greener, safer and more liveable Chișinău on Wednesday, as the capital marked 590 years since its first documented mention.

**Sandu's vision for a European capital**

“Brick by brick, we must build a European Chișinău for our children and grandchildren — a greener city, with modern public transport, safe streets and respect for pedestrians,” Sandu wrote on Facebook.

She described her vision of a capital that values its history and protects its heritage while looking confidently towards the future.

“A European capital not just in name, but in the way it is administered and in the quality of life it offers people,” she wrote.

Sandu also reflected on the personal significance of Chișinău, saying that for some residents it is the city of their childhood, while others have come there to study, work and start a family.

“For me, Chișinău was first the city I discovered through the eyes of a young woman, and later the place where I built my own path,” the president said.

She urged residents to care for the capital every day as they would their own homes and wished them a happy City Day.

**Festivities across the capital**

Chișinău is celebrating its annual City Day on Wednesday, October 14, with concerts, food stalls, traditional crafts fairs and family activities in the city centre and other districts.

The programme begins at 8:30 a.m. with a Divine Liturgy at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Nativity of the Lord, followed by festivities throughout the day.

An evening concert is scheduled to begin at 7:45 p.m., featuring the Chișinău Municipal Folk Orchestra, led by the Advahov Brothers, as well as Zdob și Zdub and Lupii lui Calancea.

Performers are also due to include Zinaida Julea, Mihai Ciobanu, Igor Cuciuc, Adrian Ursu, Cătălin Josan, Pasha Parfeni, Natalia Barbu, Natalia Gordienko and Brio Sonores.
