# Moldovan hospital geriatric ward aids rural elderly patients

Strășeni District Hospital operates a dedicated 28-bed geriatric department, providing elderly rural patients suffering from chronic illnesses with specialized clinical treatment, psychological reassurance, and daily rehabilitation support.

**Dedicated care for vulnerable seniors**

For many elderly citizens across rural Moldova, prolonged solitude combined with chronic medical conditions makes daily living increasingly difficult. In response, hospital-based geriatric units bridge clinical treatment with attentive personal support. At the Strășeni facility, patients share modern rooms designed to foster companionship during recovery.

Marina Oprea and Pavlina Dodon, longtime neighbors from the same village, routinely share a hospital room during treatment cycles.

*“We understand each other like sisters,”* said Pavlina Dodon. *“I have spent years moving between hospital departments since my 22-year-old son passed away in 1997, and this care provides vital relief.”*

*“I arrived here with severe headaches on a referral from my family physician,”* added Marina Oprea. *“The wards are clean, they look after us thoroughly, and we support each other.”*

**Restoring autonomy and dignity**

Local community groups also support the ward's therapeutic environment, with kindergarten children and educators recently visiting the department to perform traditional songs for hospitalized patients. For residents, personal attention remains as valuable as medication.

*“The doctors here are attentive and treat us with immense dignity,”* noted another hospitalized patient undergoing care for severe spinal conditions.

Clinical leadership stresses that geriatric medicine must address both somatic symptoms and emotional vulnerability.

*“Every patient requires an individual approach,”* said Constantin Vacaru, Chief of the Geriatric Department. *“Beyond pharmacological therapy, elderly patients require genuine empathy and emotional reassurance.”*

*“Patients come to stabilize their health and learn practical self-care habits, from managing medications to nutrition and mobility,”* emphasized Olesea Munteanu, Deputy Director of the Strășeni District Hospital. *“This enables them to feel confident and know when to seek assistance once they return home.”*

Across the Republic of Moldova, specialized geriatric infrastructure currently includes two specialized hospital departments in the capital city of Chișinău and 35 regional geriatric care units nationwide.
