Rheumatologists in Moldova are sounding the alarm over rising cases of musculoskeletal disorders, warning that degenerative and autoimmune joint diseases represent a major public health challenge that threatens long-term mobility.

Speaking on public broadcaster Radio Moldova, leading rheumatologist Liliana Groppa stressed that modern clinical interventions can significantly slow disease progression if patients seek care at the first signs of inflammation and persistent pain.

**Demographic aging and rising caseloads**

Moldova mirrors broader European epidemiological patterns, recording a steady influx of patients across all age brackets, including young adults and children. While systemic autoimmune disorders affect roughly 1% of the population, degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis expand rapidly with age, afflicting an estimated 60% of citizens over 60.

*“We are no different from other nations,”* said Dr. Groppa in an interview with journalist Galina Alcaz. *“The number of patients with these conditions continues to rise among the elderly, young adults and even pediatric patients.”*

Medical specialists emphasize that inflammatory pathologies can attack virtually any anatomical structure, ranging from small finger joints to weight-bearing hip, knee, and ankle complexes. Untreated inflammation frequently leads to severe functional impairment and permanent joint degradation.

**Therapeutic breakthroughs and prevention**

Substantial pharmaceutical advances have transformed the management of rheumatic disorders over the past decade, shifting outcomes from progressive disability toward prolonged quality of life. Specialized therapies now allow clinicians to halt localized infection triggers and suppress excessive autoimmune cascades before irreversible cartilage breakdown occurs.

*“Modern pharmaceutical therapies combat pain, restore mobility, and modulate immune dysfunction,”* Dr. Groppa noted. *“These advanced regimens extend life expectancy and safeguard independence, which is vital because chronic cases require extended clinical oversight.”*

Because the root etiology of many autoimmune conditions remains elusive, medical professionals urge the public to adopt preventive lifestyle measures. Specialists recommend sustained daily physical activity, balanced diets rich in vegetables, fruits, and omega-3 fatty acids, targeted stress management, and prompt eradication of chronic bacterial or viral infections.
