The European Union is actively examining potential support measures for Moldova as surging regional energy costs strain household budgets ahead of winter, EU Ambassador to Chișinău Iwona Piórko confirmed.

The price surge stems from persistent volatility across international markets, a shock felt across the bloc but hitting consumers in the EU candidate nation with particular severity.

*“We are all facing the same headwinds, unfortunately,”* said Piórko during an appearance on Radio Moldova. *“Rising energy prices driven by international volatility affect European citizens too, but here the public feels the strain even more acutely.”*

**Budget support and long-term resilience**

The European Union has consistently intervened to safeguard Moldova’s energy security through critical market shifts. Between 2021 and 2023, Brussels disbursed roughly €240 million (approx. 4.62 billion MDL) in direct budget support.

An additional €250 million (approx. 4.81 billion MDL) package was enacted in 2025 to bolster structural energy resilience and reduce systemic external vulnerabilities.

The evolving crisis was raised by Moldovan government leadership during recent bilateral sessions at the EU-Moldova Association Council, engaging directly with the European Commission and Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos.

*“We are closely monitoring the situation,”* Piórko noted. *“Your prime minister discussed this issue at the Association Council with the energy commissioner and Commissioner Marta Kos, and we will examine options for assistance.”*

**Regulatory adjustments on domestic gas tariffs**

Moldova’s National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) approved a steep increase in domestic natural gas rates on Sept. 28, passing through higher import procurement expenses.

Effective Oct. 1, household tariffs climbed to 26.14 MDL (€1.36) per cubic meter including VAT, up nearly 29% from the previous level of 20.30 MDL. Regulatory authorities have not ruled out further pricing adjustments before year-end if international wholesale volatility persists.
