# Phones and headphones endanger pedestrians, warns INSP

> Speeding when conditions don't allow it and failing to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians are among the primary causes of road accidents. Representatives of the National Public Security Inspectorate (INSP) urge both drivers and pedestrians to exercise heightened caution, especially during rain or when visibility is poor.

Recently, there has been a series of serious accidents involving pedestrians—some resulting in fatalities—with approximately 60% of these incidents occurring in areas designated for pedestrian use, such as crosswalks or sidewalks.

*“Especially during this time of year—with reduced visibility, earlier sunsets, and precipitation that further impairs visibility”* stated Pavel Apostol, Head of the Road Accident Records and Analysis Section at the INSP (National Public Security Inspectorate), during the program “Bună Dimineața” on Moldova 1 TV.

According to the expert, drivers must adjust their speed to road conditions, remain alert near pedestrian crossings, and be prepared to brake to avoid a collision.

"While pedestrians have the right of way when crossing the street at a pedestrian crossing, they also have a responsibility to ensure it is safe to do so," the expert explained.

He also highlighted the risks associated with using mobile phones and headphones while on the move, as these can distract pedestrians and prevent them from noticing dangerous traffic situations—such as approaching vehicles—in time.

To make themselves more visible to drivers, pedestrians are encouraged to wear light-colored clothing and reflective items, especially at night or in conditions of poor visibility.

"There is a need for greater awareness of the risks, through prevention and information initiatives. Furthermore, to ensure safety on the road, it is essential to have road infrastructure adapted to the needs of all categories of road users," the specialist added.

The police urge all road users—pedestrians included—to follow traffic rules and to check carefully before crossing the street, regardless of whether or not they have the right of way. Inattention and overreliance on other road users to follow the rules can have serious consequences.
