The Republic of Moldova is projected to record economic growth of 1.7% in 2026—up from a previous estimate of 1.5%—driven primarily by better-than-expected performance in the agricultural sector. Experts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) revised this forecast during an assessment mission in the country between October 21 and 28.

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan discussed economic outlooks, inflation trends, fiscal and budgetary policies, and reform of the public sector wage system with an IMF expert team led by Alina Iancu.

According to updated forecasts presented by the Fund’s representatives, the Republic of Moldova's economy is projected to grow by 2% in 2027. The revision of estimates for the current year primarily reflects favorable developments in the agricultural sector, which have contributed to an improved economic growth outlook.

Another topic addressed during the meeting was the inflation trend, amid pressures from the energy crisis and high energy prices. Government and IMF representatives analyzed inflation forecasts, as well as factors that could influence price dynamics in the coming period.

The discussions also addressed fiscal and budgetary policies, including the reform of the public sector wage system, in the context of the objectives to maintain macroeconomic stability and support economic growth.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan reiterated the Government’s commitment to promoting responsible economic policies and continuing reforms to develop the economy and improve the population's standard of living.

According to a government statement, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining macroeconomic stability and continuing reforms designed to support economic growth and the well-being of citizens.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides expressed appreciation for their ongoing cooperation and agreed to continue their dialogue and collaboration. Furthermore, it was agreed that a new International Monetary Fund mission to the Republic of Moldova would be organized for early 2027.
