Selecting winter tyres is not only about road safety; it can also reduce fuel consumption. The tyre label provides key information on energy efficiency, wet grip, and noise levels, helping drivers compare products and make an informed decision.

According to an example provided by the National Center for Sustainable Energy, the difference between Class A and Class C tires can amount to savings of approximately 30 liters of fuel per year for a vehicle that travels 15,000 kilometers.

When purchasing a new set of tyres, drivers should look beyond the price and pay attention to the product label. It includes indicators that show the tyres' performance and operational efficiency.

One of the most important indicators is fuel efficiency, which depends on rolling resistance. The lower the rolling resistance, the less energy the vehicle requires to move, resulting in lower fuel consumption.

According to the example provided by the authorities, the difference between Class A and Class C tyres can reach approximately 0.2 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. Consequently, for a driver who covers 15,000 kilometers annually, the savings could amount to about 30 liters of fuel.

However, this estimate is for guidance only; actual fuel consumption depends on several factors, including the vehicle's characteristics, road conditions, and driving style.

Another important label indicator is wet grip, which shows how well the tyre performs during braking on a wet road. This criterion is especially crucial in cold weather, when drivers may encounter rain, sleet, or snow, and a tyre's ability to brake effectively can make all the difference.

The label also provides information on the external noise level generated by the tyres—expressed in decibels—and includes a QR code that allows consumers to access additional product data.

In the Republic of Moldova, a Government decision adopted in October 2024 regulates tyre labelling. This measure aims to make it easier to compare tyres and give consumers the information they need to make an informed choice.

Just as important as selecting the right tyres is their proper maintenance. As temperatures drop, tyre pressure can fluctuate; therefore, experts recommend checking it regularly, in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer's specifications.

Underinflated tyres can increase fuel consumption, cause uneven wear, and negatively affect a vehicle's stability and handling on the road.

Drivers should also periodically check their tyres' condition and wear level and ensure they use the tyre sizes recommended for their specific vehicle model.

Consequently, preparing a vehicle for the cold season involves more than just changing the tyres. Choosing the right tyres, monitoring tyre pressure, and following the manufacturer's recommendations contribute to road safety and lower vehicle maintenance and fuel costs.
