Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi is on an official visit to Romania, where he is attending the annual meeting of foreign ministers from Central European Initiative (CEI) member states, hosted in Bucharest.

The event brings together high-ranking officials from the 16 member states of the Central European Initiative (CEI) and is held under the theme “Closer in the Region, Stronger in Europe.”

The meeting also marks the conclusion of Romania’s chairmanship of the organization, which it held throughout 2026.

Mihai Popșoi’s agenda for his visit to Bucharest includes several bilateral meetings, notably with his Romanian counterpart, Dan Neculăescu, and the President of the Romanian Senate, Mircea Abrudean.

Discussions will focus on strengthening the strategic partnership between the Republic of Moldova and Romania, Bucharest's support for our country’s accession to the European Union, and current security challenges in the region.

On October 27, Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan met with his Romanian counterpart, Luca Niculescu, in Chișinău. It was Niculescu’s first foreign visit since taking office.

The two officials discussed accelerating joint infrastructure projects, including the construction of bridges across the Prut, the modernization of border crossing points, and the development of energy interconnections.

They also focused on attracting Romanian investment, diversifying natural gas supply sources, and strengthening regional security.

The Romanian Prime Minister reaffirmed Bucharest’s strong support for Moldova’s accession to the European Union.

On November 2, the defence ministers of the Republic of Moldova and Romania signed several agreements on cooperation and mutual military support, including participation in joint procurement of military equipment through the European SAFE (Security Action for Europe) mechanism.

The agreements are expected to strengthen the National Army’s logistical and operational capabilities, align military standards, and improve interoperability between the two countries' armed forces.

In addition to procuring military transport vehicles, Chișinău is exploring ways to expand cooperation through the SAFE mechanism to acquire and develop air defence systems and anti-drone technologies.
