A press release issued by the Party of National Unity states that the decision to merge with the PLDM was taken as a result of the need to strengthen the Romanian and European pole in Moldova. The document also states that the PLDM "appreciates and welcomes the political decision of the PUN to unify in order to strengthen and develop the Romanian and European integration vector".

At the same time, the PLDM urges other parties to follow the example of the PUN.

The two parties have started discussions for the merger congress and the preparation of the political programme.

Alexandru Cimbriciuc, a former member of the Moldovan Parliament in the PLDM faction from 2009-2014, former deputy minister of defence from 2015-2016, was elected to head the National Unity Party.

As a reminder, on 7 February 2016, Anatol Șalaru announced his intention to establish a new party. A few days later, MP Ana Gutu founded the Right Party, which was registered on 28 March 2016 and changed its name to the Party of National Unity on 11 June 2017. Subsequently, Anatol Șalaru was elected executive president and Ana Guțu, first vice-president.

On 7 December 2019, Octavian Țîcu was elected president of the PUN, who announced in December 2021 that he was leaving the party. Thus, Anatol Șalaru took over the interim office.

The PLDM was formed in December 2007 and Vlad Filat was elected president. After Filat's arrest warrant was issued, Viorel Cibotaru and Tudor Deliu were elected as chairmen.

The first vice-president of the PUN, Ana Gutu, reacted yesterday on Facebook, commenting on the decision of the Congress which voted with "a clear majority of votes to start negotiations on the merger of the Party of National Unity with the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova".

"Taking into account the fact that I gave the only categorical vote against the merger of PUN with PLDM, I resigned as first vice-president of the Party of National Unity."
