Klaus Iohannis: If we Europeans fail to help Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, we have lost

The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are part of democratic Europe, and "if we Europeans fail to help them, we have lost, it's as simple as that", Romanian President Klaus Iohannis told a press conference at the EPC Summit.

The Romanian head of state stressed that aid to Ukraine must continue until it achieves victory.

"If we Europeans fail to help Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, it means that we have lost, it is that simple. But this is not the only reason why we help Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, we do it because it is right, because in our opinion they are part of democratic Europe, they are part of our community. Moldova and Ukraine are part of ours. As far as the NATO Summit is concerned, of course we will discuss the options that are possible. What is important is that Ukraine feels that we are giving them guarantees that we will help them until they win. The same goes for Moldova. It would be wrong to focus only on the European integration element, security has many facets", said Klaus Iohannis.

A main objective of the EPC Summit was to send several clear political signals, which was achieved in a categorical manner, said the Romanian President. At the same time, according to the official, the meeting discussed a number of topical issues, starting with the impact of the war in Ukraine and ending with issues of interest to all participants, such as resilience building, energy security and connectivity issues.

"From our point of view, from Romania's point of view, a main objective of the meeting was to send several clear political signals. This objective was achieved in a categorical manner. A first signal was the importance of the Republic of Moldova for the whole European continent and the support it receives for ensuring its security and stability, as well as for joining the EU. The Republic of Moldova is not alone in the face of the challenges, Romania is there for it as shown by concrete actions. The support of democratic states will continue for the Republic of Moldova, for Ukraine and for the region.

A second signal was the reiteration of support for Ukraine in the struggle to win the war. Support as I said will be given for as long as it is needed.

A third signal was addressed to the region, Eastern Europe and the wider Black Sea region are regions whose strategic importance has become evident to the whole world, and our talks confirm the attention that is being paid to the region at the level it deserves," Klaus Iohannis said.

The President of Romania also mentioned that the area of resilience is of strategic relevance, a fact confirmed during the Summit debates. "From this point of view, the EPC Summit was a success", said Klaus Ionannis.
