Tragedy in India: Around 300 people killed in train crash
Around 300 people have died and 850 others have been injured in a train collision in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, reports the BBC. More than 200 ambulances have been sent to the scene in Balasore district, says Odisha's chief secretary Pradeep Jena.
According to preliminary information, one passenger train derailed before being hit by another on the adjacent line. The tragedy occurred on Friday evening.
It is the worst train crash in India this century. Officials say the death toll is expected to rise further. Indian Railways said the two services involved are the Coromandel Express and the Howrah Superfast Express.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was disturbed by the incident and his thoughts were with the bereaved families.
"Rescue operations are ongoing at the scene and all possible assistance is being given to those affected," he tweeted.
