"Russia must be held accountable". Moldovan authorities condemn destruction of Nova Kakhovka dam
The Moldovan authorities condemn the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam this morning. The country's President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Dorin Recean wrote on Twitter that the Republic of Moldova is ready to provide necessary assistance to Ukraine to overcome the consequences.
"Russia's vision of critical infrastructure amounts to war crimes. We are ready to provide assistance in response to the floods and support efforts to mitigate the impact," the president stressed.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean said that the destruction of the target creates new challenges in the whole region.
"We strongly condemn the deliberate destruction of the Nova Kahovka dam in the Herson region of Ukraine, which endangers civilians and creates new challenges in the whole region. Russia must be held accountable. We stand by Ukraine and stand ready to provide the necessary assistance," the Chief Executive wrote on his Twitter page.
This morning, the Kahovka dam in Russian-controlled parts of Ukraine's Herson region was destroyed. The dam supplies water to the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014, and the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, also under Russian control.
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski has called an emergency meeting of the National Security Council.
