The North Atlantic Alliance's support for the Republic of Moldova must be strengthened, President Klaus Iohannis said in Bratislava (Slovak Republic), as he attended the Bucharest 9 (B9) NATO Summit. The Romanian head of state stressed that Romania's support for Ukraine's accession to the Alliance "is unwavering".

"Romania is the NATO Ally with the longest border with Ukraine and we clearly understand the need to strengthen our national defence and to reinforce NATO's position on the Eastern flank in a unified and coherent, credible and robust way, including on the Black Sea. This effort is transatlantic in scope and focus. We must ensure that the decisions taken last year in Madrid are fully implemented. And I include here also decisions on the strategic importance of the Black Sea for Euro-Atlantic security. We will continue to support Ukraine for as long as necessary. Ukraine's victory in this war is our primary objective. At the same time, Romania's support for Ukraine's accession to the Alliance, as foreseen at the 2008 NATO Summit in Bucharest, is unwavering. At the same time, we must strengthen our support for NATO's vulnerable partners, especially the Republic of Moldova, in order to strengthen its defence and resilience capabilities", said the President of Romania.

The Bucharest 9 (B9) Summit, co-chaired by the Presidents of Romania, Slovakia and Poland, is taking place in Bratislava.

The agenda for the discussions is to assess progress in implementing Allied decisions taken at the NATO Madrid Summit, including defence investment and spending commitments, and to support Ukraine in its Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
