Mircea Geoană, after the meeting with Nicu Popescu: "The future of the Republic of Moldova is in the family of European democracies"
The level of cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and NATO has increased amid Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine. The statement was made by NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană at a joint briefing in Brussels with Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu. Moreover, Mircea Geoană said that the future of the Republic of Moldova is in the family of European democracies.
"NATO and the Republic of Moldova have been cooperating for three decades. We raised the level of our cooperation in the wake of Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine. Russia's war in Ukraine has created deep reverberations for our common security. Russia continues to use hybrid warfare tactics, resorting to social and economic pressure, energy blackmail and attempts to destabilise our democracies. The Republic of Moldova unfortunately faces these threats. The Republic of Moldova is responding with determination to this security situation. The future of the Republic of Moldova is in the family of European democracies".
NATO is helping us to keep Moldova firmly in the European family of states, said the head of the Moldovan delegation. According to Nicu Popescu, over the last three decades, NATO has always supported democracy in the Republic of Moldova, the reform process and the stability of our country.
"For our country, more than ever, it is important not to be alone. Let's strengthen those partnerships, those friendships with those states and organizations that help the Republic of Moldova, that help us to maintain peace, calm, stability, freedom and Europeanness of our country. This visit to NATO HQ, the discussions we have with NATO help us to keep the Republic of Moldova firmly in the European family of states", Nicu Popescu noted.
From 6 to 8 June, Nicu Popescu will visit Brussels and Stockhom to promote the acceleration of Moldova's accession process to the European Union.
