Minister of the Environment about the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam: "It is an ecological catastrophe that will recover in many years"
The destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam in Ukraine generated an ecological catastrophe, and it would take many years and considerable investments to restore the infrastructure, fauna and aquatic flora, says the Minister of the Environment, Rodica Iordanov.
She said in a show on the public television station that the risks of this catastrophe for the Republic of Moldova are minimal, but the authorities of both states are in the process of permanent communication.
"The question remains open, what will happen to this surface when the water recedes. All those garbage, economic activities have now been plugged by water. It is an ecological catastrophe that will take many years to recover. We were alerted by our colleagues from Ukraine and respectively we took over discussions on the side of Novodnistrovsk, if there is a power failure, the systems are connected, they informed us that we will not have problems with electricity", said Rodica Iordanov.
The Nova Kahovka dam, located in the Russian-held parts of the Kherson region near the front line and supplying drinking water to southern Ukraine and the annexed Crimean peninsula, was destroyed on Tuesday. After the collapse of the dam, more than 80 localities were flooded and thousands of people were evacuated.
