Britain will support Ukraine to expand its cyber defences
Britain announced on Sunday that it will expand its programme to support Ukraine's cyber defences as the country wages a counteroffensive against Russia. The British government said it would provide a further £16 million in funding, with the possibility of a further £9 million coming from international allies, Reuters reports.
According to London, the package - which is in addition to the £6.35m announced last year - would better equip Ukraine to defend its critical national infrastructure from crippling Russian attacks as Kiev mounts a counteroffensive to repel Russian forces from areas in southern and eastern Ukraine.
"Russia's appalling attacks on Ukraine are not limited to their barbaric invasion of territory, but also involve appalling attempts to attack their cyber infrastructure, which provides vital services from banking to energy supplies," said British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
"This funding is essential to stopping these attacks, strengthening Ukraine's cyber defences and increasing the country's ability to detect and disable the malware they target," the UK Prime Minister added.
Next week, Sunak will ask entrepreneurs and businesses at a conference to step up their investment in Ukraine to help it rebuild its economy after Russia's invasion.
