The "Șor" party was declared unconstitutional
The Constitutional Court judges declared unconstitutional the "Sor" Party. The High Court granted the Government's request to ban the activity of the party led by Ilan Șor. The decision was announced by Constitutional Court President Nicolae Rosca after more than three hours of deliberations. According to the ruling, "Șor" deputies in Parliament will serve until the end of their mandate as independent deputies.
In November 2022, the executive called for a review of the constitutionality of the "Șor" party, which it accuses of acting in contradiction with the principles of the rule of law and endangering the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Moldova, being externally financed and supported by Russian secret services. Shortly afterwards, the Constitutional Court requested the opinion of the Venice Commission on the case. It issued an opinion warning the authorities that declaring a political party unconstitutional could constitute an interference in the right to freedom of association, and therefore a decision in this regard should be legal, legitimate and proportionate.
The Constitutional Court started hearings on the case on 17 May.
Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru told Radio Moldova last week that regardless of the final decision of the Constitutional Court on the Șor political party, the High Court will nevertheless issue some valuable findings that will discipline political parties in future decision-making under the law.
