Jens Stoltenberg, meeting with the Lithuanian president before the NATO Summit in Vilnius. Comments about the situation in Russia

The events of the weekend are an internal matter for Russia and further proof that the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the start of the war in Russia was a strategic mistake. The statement was made by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a meeting with the President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda, who also mentioned that the situation in the Russian Federation is being monitored.

"As Russia continues its assault, it is even more important that we continue our support for Ukraine." The Secretary-General also condemned Russia's announcement of the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus, calling it "reckless and irresponsible". "We see no indication that Russia is preparing to use nuclear weapons, but NATO remains vigilant. If Russia thinks it can intimidate us into not supporting Ukraine, it is wrong," Jens Stoltenberg continued. The two leaders discussed the final preparations for the Vilnius Summit, which will take place on July 11 and 12. This is a multi-year package of assistance and improved political ties with Ukraine. NATO leaders also propose strengthening Allies' deterrence and defense — with new regional plans and a rotational model for air and missile defense. Allies will also agree on a more ambitious defense investment commitment, with a minimum of 2 percent of GDP.
