Maia Sandu decreed July 4 as a day of national mourning to commemorate the victims of the incident at the Airport
The 4th of July is declared a day of national mourning, for the commemoration of Serghei Muntean and Igor Ciofu, victims of the tragic incident that happened at the Chisinau International Airport. The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, signed a decree in this sense.
Thus, tomorrow, in all localities in the country, as well as in the diplomatic and consular missions of the Republic of Moldova abroad, the state flags will be flown at half mast. At 12:00, the memory of the victims will be honored by keeping a moment of silence.
"Public authorities, businesses and organizations are recommended to refrain from conducting entertaining mass actions, and media institutions to take into account the specifics of the 4th of July when editing publications and writting programs," reads the press release of the presidential institution.
The Head of State also signed a decree posthumously awarding the "Military Merit" Medal to Igor Ciofu, reserve lieutenant-colonel of the State Protection and Guard Service, and to Serghei Munteanu, deputy chief agent of Border Police of the Ministry of Interior.
We remind you that the border policeman, Serghei Muntean, and the security guard, Igor Ciofu, were shot in cold blood by a citizen of Tajikistan, who was not allowed to enter the Republic of Moldova. The attacker was injured by law enforcement officers, is in hospital in serious condition and faces life imprisonment.
