North Atlantic Council extends NATO Secretary General's mandate
NATO allies agreed on Tuesday (4 July 2023) to extend Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg's term of office for another year, until 1 October 2024. The decision will be approved by NATO heads of state and government at their summit in Vilnius.
The Allies thanked the Secretary General for his leadership and commitment, "which has been essential in preserving transatlantic unity in the face of unprecedented security challenges," a NATO statement said.
"I am honoured by NATO Allies' decision to extend my term as Secretary General. The transatlantic link between Europe and North America has ensured our freedom and security for nearly seventy-five years, and in a more dangerous world, our great Alliance is more important than ever," said Jens Stoltenberg.
Jens Stoltenberg was born on 16 March 1959 in Oslo, Norway. He is a Norwegian Labour Party politician and served as Prime Minister of Norway 2000-2005. He has been Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation since 2014.
