Nicu Popescu, following the Vilnius meeting: "It is important to develop our airspace protection capabilities"
The Moldovan authorities are working with the North Atlantic Alliance to strengthen the capacity of the National Army, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicu Popescu, after the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Vilnius. The Moldovan head of diplomacy stressed the importance of developing our airspace protection capabilities.
"You are well aware that last year the Republic of Moldova was affected by these airspace violations as a result of air strikes launched by the Russian Federation towards Ukraine, which create enormous problems for our security. It has even caused the suspension and reduction of the number of flights. It is important for the Republic of Moldova to develop our capabilities to protect our airspace, including our capabilities to combat potentially destabilising drones," said the head of diplomacy in Chisinau.
Nicu Popescu also said that several support projects for the Republic of Moldova were announced during the meeting, but NATO will communicate them later.
"But obviously the most important result is that we have further strengthened Moldova's place in the family of European states and the support of the most powerful democratic states in the world for the peace, security and prosperity of the Republic of Moldova. It is absolutely clear that the message for Moldova is a strong one for the territorial integrity of the country, for our security, for our freedom and for our European future. The message is clear, Moldova is not alone, Moldova has the full support of NATO, the EU and partner states for our citizens", the Minister concluded.
The heads of state and government of NATO allies attending the North Atlantic Alliance Council Summit in Vilnius adopted a declaration which also targets the Republic of Moldova. The Alliance also sent a message of support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country.
