British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the agreement would send "a strong signal" to Vladimir Putin. Sunak also said the allies were emphasising their "formal arrangements to protect Ukraine for the long term".

It comes after Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski criticised NATO's reluctance to set a timetable for his country's accession to the alliance.

"We must never again see a repeat of what happened in Ukraine, and this statement reaffirms our commitment to ensuring that it is never again left vulnerable to the kind of brutality that Russia has caused," the British prime minister said.

He added that supporting Ukraine's "path to NATO" and creating "formal, multilateral and bilateral arrangements" between NATO members would send a clear message to the Russian dictator and that they would "restore peace to Europe".

NATO leaders yesterday announced a new package for Ukraine to support its integration into NATO. Thus, they decided to establish the NATO-Ukraine Council. It is a new joint body in which the Allies and Ukraine are equal members.
