President Klaus Iohannis sent a message on National Anthem Day
Today is Romania's National Anthem Day, symbol of the unity of the Romanian Revolution of 1848 and Romania's state anthem after the anti-communist revolution of 1989. President Klaus Iohannis has sent a message on National Anthem Day, in which he stresses that it is essential to fight for respect for the ideals and values that define modern Romania: freedom, democracy, pluralism, respect for the law, reports Agerpres.

"The National Anthem has become a symbol of the unity of the nation, of the independence of the Romanian state and of the affirmation of the Romanian nation as part of the great European democratic family. We celebrate this special day with dignity and gratitude for the past and with hope for our future as a nation. It is essential to carry forward the vibrant message of the National Anthem, to strengthen national cohesion, to fight for the ideals and values that define modern Romania - freedom, democracy, pluralism, respect for the law, but also to ensure the security and prosperity of our country. Happy birthday to the National Anthem", said the President of Romania, quoted by Agerpres.
Klaus Iohannis points out that this year marks 175 years since the 1848 revolutionaries first sang Anton Pann's song to the lyrics of Andrei Muresan.
"The lyrics of the anthem, a moving plea for our culture and history, have accompanied us through the ages both in times of hope and celebration of great national events and in times of hardship and challenge. Each generation, in crucial moments for our country and nation, has sung "Wake up, Romanian!" in order to reaffirm the adherence to the principles and ideals contained in the lyrics of the anthem and to revive national cohesion and identity", said the Romanian Head of State.
The lyrics of the national anthem belong to Andrei Mureșanu (1816-1863), a Romantic poet, journalist, translator and a true tribune of the era marked by the 1848 Revolution. The music was composed by Anton Pann (1796-1854), poet and ethnographer, a man of great culture, singer and author of music manuals.
For a short period - from 27 August 1991 to 7 June 1994 - "Wake up, Romanian!" was also the anthem of the Republic of Moldova.
Sung at demonstrations and marches unauthorised by the communist regime, at the opening of the meetings of the "Alexe Mateevici" Cenacle and at other actions of the national liberation movement in the late 1980s, "Wake up, Romanian!" was enthusiastically approved with the vote on the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova on 27 August 1991, at the request of the participants in the 3rd Grand National Assembly on the same day, notes jurist and historian Mihai Tașcă.
On the morning of Tuesday 7 June 1994, the national anthem "Wake up, Romanian!" was sung for the last time in the Republic of Moldova.
