The landslide happened in the Shovi area on Thursday evening, but rescuers were unable to access the site until after nightfall, Formula TV reports.

Officials said two bridges were destroyed and roads had been covered by mud.

The popular holiday and mountaineering destination is located in the Racha region, near the Russian border, about 140 kilometres north-west of the capital Tbilisi.

It is popular for its mineral springs and rugged mountain vistas and contains cottages and small hotels.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili went to the region on Friday and said the death toll stood at seven before more bodies were found.

Georgian news reports cited officials as saying about 25 people remained unaccounted-for.

Health Minister Zurab Azarashvili said only some of the bodies have been identified, according to Tbilisi based OC Media.
