Strong earthquake in Turkey: People jumped from the balcony in fear
A strong 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Turkey on Thursday, according to the Turkish Seismological Agency. The earthquake occurred at 20:48 local time, and the epicenter was located 10 kilometers south-southwest of Malatya and 131 km north-northwest of Şanlîurfa, according to EMSC, writes Digi24.
According to the European Seismological Center for the Mediterranean (EMSC), the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.2, and the depth at which it occurred was 11 kilometers. The Turkish seismological agency reports that the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.3, and the depth at which it occurred was 7 kilometers.
Many people came out scared into the street immediately after the earthquake. A building in Battalgazi district that was uninhabited collapsed and a child who was passing by at the time was injured and taken to hospital.
There are also some cases of people jumping from the balcony in fear, Malatya Governor Ersin Yazici was quoted as saying by Anadolu.
"So far there is no loss of life. Due to fear, panic and jumping from heights, 22 of our citizens were slightly injured. I wish our injured citizens a speedy recovery. May God protect our country from all kinds of disasters,” Yerlikaya said.
Turkey was hit on February 6 by a magnitude 7.8 surface earthquake that severely affected southeastern Turkey and northern Syria, killing more than 50,000 people.
