International Youth Day // How many young people are there in the Republic of Moldova
Today, August 12, we mark International Youth Day. On this occasion, artistic events will be organized in several localities in the Republic of Moldova. The municipality of Ungheni, this year's youth capital, will host guests from all over the country at a large-scale event dedicated to young people. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, young people represent about a quarter of the country's population, and decreased by almost 37 thousand compared to 2022.
The event to celebrate the International Youth Day takes place in Ungheni - this year's Youth Capital. The start is at the railway station in Chisinau, at 10:00 a.m., from where over 200 young people will leave for Ungheni with a special "Youth Train" race. In addition to concerts and dances, games, contests, masterclasses, and raffles with prizes will be organized.
The Minister of Education and Research, Dan Perciun, and UNFPA resident representative in the Republic of Moldova, Nigina Abaszada, will participate in the event. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, in the Republic of Moldova there are over 615 thousand young people, aged between 14 and 34. In 2023, their number constituted almost a quarter of the country's population. At the same time, the young generation is decreasing by 37 thousand people compared to the previous year.
We remind that in 1999, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) declared August 12 as International Youth Day. This day was established to raise awareness of issues affecting young people and to promote their involvement in social, economic and political processes. The theme of this year's edition is "Green skills for young people: towards a sustainable world".
