Moldova's Foreign Minister urges ambassadors to maintain EU Support
Moldova's Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu on Wednesday urged the country's ambassadors to maintain the support of each European Union member state in order to start accession negotiations with the bloc.
Speaking at a meeting of ambassadors in Chisinau, Popescu said that Moldova has made significant progress in meeting the EU's requirements for membership, but that more work is needed.
"We have achieved the status of candidate country for EU membership," Popescu said. "In this context, our next major objective is to meet the nine recommendations made by the European Commission, so that at the end of this year, in the enlargement report, it will be recommended to start negotiations for Moldova's accession to the European Union."
Popescu also said that Moldova will continue to deepen its strategic partnership with Romania and develop cooperation within international organisations. He said that a priority for the Chisinau authorities remains the deepening of the strategic partnership with Romania.
"We will also promote dialogue with strategic partners, including by opening a new embassy of our country in India, and strengthen cooperation with international organisations such as NATO, CoE, UN, OSCE," Popescu said.
The meeting was attended by 40 heads of Moldova's diplomatic missions accredited abroad.
