Ukrainian forces make significant gains in southeast, analysts say
Russian forces launched airstrikes on nine Ukrainian regions on Tuesday, targeting critical infrastructure and residential neighbourhoods. The attacks killed two civilians and wounded four others.
The heaviest damage was reported in the Donetsk region, where a thermal power plant was operating at reduced capacity after being hit by a Russian strike. The attack also damaged power lines, leaving more than 14,000 consumers without power.
Other regions that were hit by the airstrikes include Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. In the Kherson region, about 11,000 consumers were left without power after the Russians destroyed the Kakhovka dam two months ago.
On the front lines, Ukrainian forces have made significant gains in the southeast of the country. The Institute for the Study of War, a US-based think tank, said that the Ukrainian advance on the Donetsk-Zaporizhia border and in the Zaporizhzhya region may mean they can operate beyond the densest part of the enemy's defensive minefields.
The Kremlin has accused the Ukrainians of attacking a military ship in the Black Sea with marine drones. According to Russian officials, the ships were carrying out "navigation control tasks" 230 kilometres from Sevastopol, and the drones were allegedly destroyed by patrol vessels before they reached their destination. Kyiv has not commented on the incident.
