EU reserves reach all-time high, facilitating commitment to not buy Russian gas until 2027
The European Union's natural gas reserves have reached a new all-time high of 90% of capacity, according to the publication Politico. This is the target set by Brussels that had to be met by November.
The EU Energy Commissioner, Kadri Simson, told Politico that the European Union is well prepared for winter, which will contribute to the further stabilization of the markets in the coming months. She stressed that the energy market is now much more stable than last year, and the European Commission will continue to monitor it.
According to the source, in this way, the EU is escaping from Russian gas dependence, which before the war in Ukraine provided almost 40% of the demand of the member states. Currently, the share is 8.4%. Russian gas is largely replaced by imports from the United States, Norway and Azerbaijan.
This, according to the publication, facilitates the European Union's commitment not to buy natural gas from the Russian Federation until 2027.
Kiev has recently stated that it does not intend to renegotiate the gas transit agreement with Moscow, which expires next year.
